What sets us apart?
Our owner
Master McGowan, is a 4th Dan Black Belt in Combat Hap Ki Do and
a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He is also a licensed police defensive tactics instructor and has been teaching martial arts for over 10 years.
Black Belt Instruction
Our classes are taught by professional Black Belt instructors trained in the latest, most innovative teaching techniques. Classes are taught through praise and recognition rather than through fear and intimidation.
Personal Development Format
Children are rewarded in class for doing their best at home, in school, and in their daily lives. Discipline, confidence and respect are natural by-products of our program. All of our students learn goals, improving their self-image and self-esteem. Our programs encourage youth to earn respect by thanking their teachers and helping around the house "without being asked". Each student has a positive peer group to help support them in their goals so they can say "no" to gangs and drugs. We reach new levels of self-expectancy with an "I can do it" attitude.
Personal Attention
We offer free one on one evaluation after every class. This is just one of many things that we do to ensure that you are making progress toward your goals. Whenever you need more development in an area, we will work with you until your goal is reached.
Affordability
With classes ranging from $75 to $150 per month, we have something for everyone's budget. We also offer family discounts!
Our classes
Little Dragons (Tae Kwon Do)
Specifically designed for kids ages 4-7, our Little Dragon program emphasizes focus, discipline, and respect.
Classes are 30 minutes long followed by 15 minutes of one-on-one evaluation.
Games and music are incorporated to keep the interest and attention of these young martial artists.
As a result of this program, parents can expect increased coordination, attention span, and listening skills as well as improved attitude and physical fitness.
In the Little Dragons program, we lay the groundwork for respectful, confident, capable martial artists.
Tae Kwon Do
Literally translated, the Korean word, "TAE" means "to kick with the foot." "KWON" denotes "a hand or fist
to block, punch, or strike." "DO," means an "art" or a "way". Thus, "Tae Kwon Do" means, "the art of kicking, blocking and punching". However, Tae Kwon Do is not merely a physical fighting skill, it is also a way of thought and life.
Through disciplined training, Tae Kwon Do improves both the mind and body, placing great emphasis on the development of personal character. Students of Real World Martial Arts are taught that self-control, self-discipline, kindness and humility must accompany their increased physical strength and ability.
We as Tae Kwon Doist have a responsibility that must not be taken lightly. Master McGowan's Martial Arts Academy challenges it's students to make a difference in our world. That all starts with
leading by example.
Ground Survival
Our Ground Survival classes are both for children and adults and are focused on teaching techniques to help get you back to your feet in the event that you are knocked or taken down to the ground. With minimal effort you will be able to defend yourself and get back to your feet to get away or get home safely. Our classes are a half hour long with fifteen minutes of grappling at the end of class to practice the techniques you learned during class time.
Take advantage of these classes now - you will get a great cardio workout, while learning practical self defense techniques.
Tae-Boxing Program
Our Tae-Boxing program includes both contact and Non-Contact classes. Tae-Boxing is a workout oriented program that emphasizes functional drills, autonomic striking and exercises to help each individual meet their own fitness needs and self-defense goals.
Our workout consists of stretching and conditioning exercises as well as drills and combinations on the heavy bags, kicking shields and focus mits.
For students who are interested in just the physical fitness and conditioning that is a critical part of the Tae-Boxing training, these classes will help you get into the best shape of your life.
For students who are also interested in the contact/sparring or self defense aspect of Tae-Boxing, our classes are designed to take you to the next level, which includes application and light contact/sparring.
Our program allows the student to choose between contact and non-contact Tae-Boxing, while still learning the art of Tae-Boxing.
Hap Ki Do
Hap Ki Do literally translated: Hap means "coordination or harmony," Ki means "the essence of power," and Do means "the art or the way" - in short, "the art of Coordinating or Harmonizing Power."
Hap Ki Do stresses deflection, as opposed to traditional forceful blocking. The defensive process of Continual Motion - moving forward with one technique after the other until an opponent is defeated.

In 1990 Grandmaster Pellegrini officially named his style of
Hap Ki Do "Combat Hap Ki Do".The name clearly identifies it and sets it apart from other "traditional" styles of Hap Ki Do.It is also referred to as the "Science of Self Defense".
In 1999, the Combat Hap Ki Do System was officially recognized and accredited as a legitimate "Kwan" of Hap Ki Do by the WKF/KKA (Kido-Hae).
The Korean name of Combat Hap Ki Do is
"Chon-Tu Kwan Hap Ki Do"
Combat Hap Ki Do is a realistic and versatile form of self protection that includes an extensive variety of strikes, kicks, joint locks, pressure points, grappling and disarming techniques. The result is a practical, comprehensive Self Defense system that is enjoyable to learn and that produces effective results in realistic situations.
Combat Hap Ki Do's dynamic concepts are based on scientific principles of anatomy and biokinetics as well as psychology and strategy. It is well suited for men and women of all ages because physical strength and athletic abilities are not essential. The emphasis is on redirecting the assailants' aggression and power back towards them with little effort and minimum force on your part.
